1.The novel Fahrenheit 451 begins : “It was a pleasure to burn.” Why does Ray Bradbury start the novel in this way? Why might it be more pleasurable to burn books rather than read them?
I believe he wrote that quote because he predicted that people would eventually despise reading and become quite bored of them because we have technology that occupies our daily life.
2. In the opening scene, why are the books compared to birds?
To give us a feeling about how people think of books in this world.
3. Discuss the difference between Montag and Clarisse’s lives.
Montag doesn't question what his world around him truly is while Clarisse has some intellect about the world around her and tries to conceal her from I'm guessing being to obvious about it.
4. Montag’s television includes headphones called “seashells.” The “wall to wall circuit” allows Mildred to enter the “play” and, therefore, the television programming. How does the technology within the novel compare to our current technology? In the first pages of the novel, does technology improve the quality of life for Montag and his wife, Mildred? Why or why not?
No because montag's wife nearly killed herself but then again the medicine which can clean people's blood must be a plus in this world but has it flaws. Some can argue its a good thing and a bad thing.
5. Why does the narrator introduce us to Montag at this time of his life, when he encounters Clarisse and confronts Mildred’s overdose?
For plot reasons like revelations such as finding out what he truly believes and questions the world itself.
6. Why does the author introduce the character of Clarisse before Mildred?
To get us into a comparison of the two characters.
7. Why are all the houses fireproof in this society?
So none of the houses can burn I suppose.
8. Why does Mildred require emergency service? What service is provided?
she took a overdose of pills and emergency hospital for a medical doctor.
9. What is the mechanical hound and what is its purpose? To watch the firehouse and kill, hunt, and finding.
10. Why does the society consider Clarisse “anti-social”? Because she did some strange things that regular people didn't do .
11. When the woman’s house is raided, why does she light the match?
To show the significance of how she burned herself alive and show us that fires can still be harmful which is shown to montage and the fireman. Probably cause in the night the fire burning is beautiful and makes a reference towards someone from oxford that burned alive.
12. Describe the relationship between Montag and Mildred.
Montag doesn't seem to care for his wife any more because he thinks of her as any regular person that is shown as dead. Just like Gatbsy's death montag shows that if his wife died he wouldn't give 2 damns about her just like Gatsby wasn't cared from others.
