How would you explain Emerson's main ideas to a ten year-old?
Well to explain some idea's to a 10 year old would be difficult if you haven't read Emerson's Self- Reliance. Be a super hero be the person you want to be. Emerson wouldn't consider his dreams as childish like in our modern day society which many people lost the hope of creativity. "To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men, — that is genius". This would mean so much to a ten year old even if he can't understand the words itself but gets the gist of it.
"What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think." This is another quote a child can relate to such as being outspoken. Others being shy they concern themselves before others not because they're more afraid of speaking against another. That sole reason makes me believe that a child can only hope to their beliefs and stay true to what he/she accomplished, believes, or wants. That much would make Emerson smile to a child who want's a gift of positivity.
"And therefore a man must know how to estimate a sour face". A quote that would be completely off topic of believing one self but this means everyone else has a sour face meaning a mask. A mask of workers, employees creativity dies in adult hood. Even then a child would stop believing in the adult who once believed in a ideal of his utmost desire. Even if others are just another faceless person in society you are you even if others believe you are nothing more then a person with unrealistic dreams.
Speak what you think now in hard words, and to-morrow speak what to-morrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradict every thing you said to-day. What you think now can change what you think tomorrow will change and so on. Yourself can change but you can only change itself. Those who believe in such ideals of wishes and hopes may change into another filled with more hope and wishes then the last. To continue to grow your wish and yourself even if it wasn't what you thought of before or something different from before.
"Let a man then know his worth, and keep things under his feet." Let your hopes be worth your while and let negativity under it. Don't let people bring down the person who makes you-you!!
